Don't stop trying to quit

STOPTOBER, the 28-day stop smoking campaign that has driven over 1 million quit attempts to date, is back for the sixth year running.
Stoptober launchBe Well Tameside teamed up with Macmillan to launch Stoptober on Tuesday 26 September at Ashton Market Ground.

The campaign, supported by Tameside Council, has already helped over 1000 residents in the borough to quit and is based on research that found that if you stop smoking for 28 days, you are five times more likely to stop for good.

Stoptober offers a range of free support and this year there’s more help available than ever. From an app and daily emails, to an online community on Facebook, there are a host of options available to offer encouragement and reassurance to people taking the first steps of their quitting journey.

As well as online support, medication including nicotine patches and gum, and devices such as e-cigarettes can be effective quitting aides.

Local stop smoking services can be contacted through Be Well Tameside at 0161 716 2000 and all of the Stoptober tools are available at www.nhs.uk/oneyou/stoptober/home.

It’s never too late to stop smoking, and the benefits from quitting can be felt within days and weeks and include reduced blood pressure, easier breathing and improved mental health and circulation.

There are more than just physical benefits too: a smoker with a 5-a-day habit could save £80 during Stoptober, and almost £1000 a year and on average, people who quit save around £250 a month.

Tameside Council Executive Member Cllr Ged Cooney said “Being an ex smoker myself, I know how hard it is trying to stop. It’s not easy - but the support that’s available really helps. It doesn’t matter how many times you have tried before, you should never give up as the benefits really are many when you stop.”

Successful quitting rates are at their highest for a decade meaning that there truly has never been a better time to quit. Why not give it a go this Stoptober and see the benefits for yourself?
