Frankie Cooper, 55, from Hattersley, had been a smoker for over 37 years – a habit which has cost her an estimated £60,791*.A Tameside woman has thanked Be Well Tameside for helping her to stub out her 15-a-day smoking habit and building her confidence.

In February 2017, Frankie was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema and suspected lung cancer. Although the tests came back negative for lung cancer, Frankie decided the scare was what she needed to quit.

Frankie had tried to quit numerous times in the past, but never managed to get past one week smoke free; so she turned to Be Well Tameside, run by Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust, for support.

Frankie had already been referred to the service for support around healthy eating, so the service went through some options to help her stop smoking - deciding on nicotine replacement therapy patches and a mouth spray.

Thanks to the support she’s now been smoke free for 18 weeks.

Frankie said: “Before I came to see Be Well Tameside I was almost isolated, as I didn’t have the confidence to mix with other people. I was also worried about my health and felt I was too young to die.

“I now feel healthier; I eat better and go to the gym. I was signposted into Live Active to get fitter and meet new people.

“I know that I couldn’t have done it alone as I didn’t have the will power. My advisor was always positive even when I was struggling; just knowing that I had someone to talk helped so much.

“I would have no hesitation in recommending Be Well Tameside as the support has been so good and has improved my whole lifestyle”

Lobna Begum-Haris, Specialist Stop Smoking Lead, said:  “It’s great to hear that our support has helped Frankie to stop smoking and become more confident.

“Her story is testament to the fact that it’s never too late to quit and never too late to start improving your health.

“As its Stoptober, it’s a great opportunity to make that commitment to quit – but we offer support all year round to make sure you’re more likely to quit for good.”
